Remote Collaboration

The survey conducted at the Global Leadership Summit in London highlighted that of all companies polled, 34% confirmed half of their workforce would be working remotely by 2020.

While we transition from the industrial age to the information age, most of us are still encumbered with the thinking that travelling each day to an office building or factory to perform work defines ongoing progress and innovation. Technology is enabling an autonomy of digital workers; using our laptop, tablet and phone we create content, influence people, manage teams and close deals from our kitchen table or local café. The physical presence is giving way to a digital persona that can perform more transactions with multiple parties, with more efficiency.

PWC’s report Real Estate 2020 on building the future acknowledges that the requirement for traditional office space is going to diminish (Chapter 5 – Technology disrupts real estate economics). Technological trends are likely to alter real estate economics more than is currently anticipated. Statistics speak for themselves and the upward global trend is that the majority of the world is increasingly collaborating on work from outside of the office. We are quickly transforming into agile digital nomads, free agents, and geographically dispersed nodes in a network.

While the process of work is being disrupted, organizations are now challenged with communicating the nuances of a project, managing the dynamics of a distributed team, and ensuring everyone understands the culture of what makes the company successful.

The need for new tools that rethink how to manage team collaboration across a field of remote workers is evolving and will help to define the future of work. We’ve compiled a list of 5 TED talks and Lisette Sutherland’s podcast – 5 ingredients of remote successful collaboration, to get you thinking about collaboration in the workplace.
